I do not speak Italian. Is it the flatter father? Is this a threat? Both? Should I memorize the speech, prancing in the local Italian cafe and use it to ask the owner's daughter, the next time I buy espresso? Seriously, What is the significance?
In the scene where Michael is walking with his bodyguards and he sees 1st Appolonia, he is like his bodyguard was struck by lightning (a bit like love at first sight). So when he realizes it is the daughter of the owners, he sincerely wants to marry her, then he reveals himself as Michael Corleone and that since he gave that information it would lose a father instead of gaining a husband. If he did not marry him, he would never have brought to light that he is. I hope this helps.
